As someone who was born and raised in Des Moines before moving to New York in 1997, I’ve had the unique perspective of watching this city evolve over the years. What was once a quieter Midwestern capital has blossomed into a vibrant hub of culture, business, and community, while still retaining the friendly charm that makes it so special.
A City on the Rise
Des Moines has seen significant growth in recent years, transforming from a well-kept secret into a dynamic destination. The city’s downtown area, once dominated by government buildings, has experienced a revitalization, with new restaurants, breweries, and shops popping up alongside the historic architecture. The Principal Riverwalk, with its scenic trails and beautiful views of the Des Moines River, is a testament to the city’s commitment to blending modern development with natural beauty.
Cultural and Artistic Hub
The arts scene in Des Moines has grown exponentially, with the Des Moines Art Center leading the way, offering an impressive collection of contemporary and modern art. The city is also home to the renowned Des Moines Symphony, which performs in the state-of-the-art Des Moines Civic Center. The annual Des Moines Arts Festival, held every summer, has become one of the top arts festivals in the country, attracting artists and visitors from across the nation.
Outdoor Adventures
For outdoor enthusiasts, Des Moines offers plenty of options. Gray’s Lake Park is a local favorite, providing a serene escape for kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply walking along the 2-mile trail. The city’s extensive network of bike trails connects neighborhoods, parks, and nearby towns, making it easy to explore on two wheels. In the summer, the Downtown Farmers’ Market brings the community together with fresh produce, local crafts, and live entertainment.
Family-Friendly Attractions
Des Moines is an ideal destination for families. The Science Center of Iowa offers interactive exhibits and an IMAX theater, while the Blank Park Zoo delights visitors with its diverse collection of animals and engaging educational programs. The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, with its stunning indoor and outdoor gardens, provides a beautiful setting for a leisurely stroll or a family outing.
Thriving Food and Drink Scene
The culinary scene in Des Moines has come a long way since I lived there, with a variety of dining options that cater to every palate. From farm-to-table restaurants highlighting Iowa’s rich agricultural heritage to trendy cafes and bustling food halls, the city’s food scene is both diverse and delicious. Local breweries, such as Exile Brewing Co. and Confluence Brewing Company, offer a taste of the region’s craft beer culture, while the East Village district is a hotspot for unique eateries and eclectic bars.
Festivals and Events
Des Moines is alive with festivals and events year-round. The Iowa State Fair, held every August, is one of the largest and most famous state fairs in the country, offering everything from livestock shows and carnival rides to deep-fried delicacies and live music. Other notable events include the World Food & Music Festival and the Des Moines Marathon, both of which draw visitors from near and far.
Welcoming Community
What hasn’t changed about Des Moines is the warmth of its community. The people here are known for their friendliness and hospitality, making visitors feel right at home. Whether you’re exploring the city’s many attractions, attending a local event, or simply chatting with locals at a coffee shop, you’ll quickly discover why so many people are proud to call Des Moines home.
Des Moines has grown and evolved since my days there, but its core values of community, culture, and quality of life remain as strong as ever. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning after many years, you’ll find plenty to love about this thriving Midwestern gem.
